Vespiquen (ビークイン Bīkuin?, Beequeen in original Japanese language versions) is one of the 493 fictional species of Pokémon creatures from the multi-billion-dollar[1] media franchise – a collection of video games, anime, manga, books, trading cards and other media created by Satoshi Tajiri. The purpose of Vespiquen in the games, anime and manga, as with all other Pokémon, is to battle both wild Pokémon, untamed creatures encountered while the player passes through various environments, and tamed Pokémon owned by Pokémon trainers.[2]
The name Vespiquen[3] is derived from the words vespa, both a genus name and Latin for wasp, and queen. Vespiquen's Japanese name, Beequeen, is derived from the English words bee and queen, alluding to queen bees. Also, Vespiquen is almost a match on Vespasian, a Roman ruler that took over the Jews, also alluding to a ruler (queen) of bees.
Biological characteristics
Vespiquen is based on queen honeybees. They have large crown-like helmets upon their heads. The helmet has an odd appearance, with two stumpy, black-tipped horns jutting out of the sides of its head. On the sides of their orange faces extend two mandible-like projections that give Vespiquen a very intimidating facial appearance. Their sinister eyes are almond-shaped and colored red. In the middle of this helmet, they bear crimson gems that have become much larger than when they were Combee. Vespiquen has a pair of small, clear wings on the back of their thoraxes, as well as black, skinny, segmented forearms with two orange fingers that resemble tarsal claws. The thorax of Vespiquen is spherical in shape and have orange circles on either side of its body, where the arms attach to the body. Vespiquen has the appearance of wearing an elegant, yellow ballroom gown with a black horizontal stripe running through the middle, making it look like a bee's abdomen. The thorax resembles a wasp nest composed of six hollow honeycombs. These cells hold Combee grubs that attack at the host Vespiquen's orders. If one were to look at Vespiquen from below, they would see that the gown-like structure of honeycombs encases Vespiquen's true abdomen.
In the video games
Vespiquen made its first appearance upon the release of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl for the Nintendo DS.
Vespiquen can only be obtained by evolving a female Combee. Combee evolves into Vespiquen at Level 21.
Vespiquen has three exclusive Bug-type moves: Attack Order, a damaging move with a high critical-hit ratio; Defense Order, which raises the user's Defense and Special Defense by one stage; and Heal Order, which restores up to half of the user's maximum HP. Defense Order is equivalent to Cosmic Power while Heal Order is equivalent to Recover and Softboiled. Attack Order is the "bug-form" of Leaf Blade. It was also one of the first Pokemon to introduce the move Power Gem, a Rock-type move that is essential for protecting itself against the Flying-type.
Vespiquen's type combination of Bug and Flying makes her immune to Ground-type attacks, but also makes her especially vulnerable to Rock-type attacks.
In the anime
Vespiquen has had one anime appearance, in the episode An Angry Combeenation! It appeared as the leader of a gigantic hive filled with Combee and honey that was discovered by Cheryl while she travelled with Ash's group.
