Saints:

Victor(2)

Victor, patron of Xanten (Germany), was claimed to have been one of the Theban Legion, and so a companion of Maurice who was martyred in c.287. These Christian soldiers, recruited in Egypt, had refused en bloc to offer sacrifice to pagan gods on the eve of a battle near Lake Geneva. The numbers of the Theban Legion killed are not known with accuracy: some estimates are certainly exaggerated. Several Rhineland towns claimed to have been closely connected with them. Feast: 22 September.
