An island of northern Canada, in the Arctic Archipelago east of Banks Island. It was discovered in the late 1830s and explored by John Rae in 1851.

Second largest island of the Arctic Archipelago, Canada. About 320 mi (515 km) long and 170 – 370 mi (270 – 600 km) wide, it has an area of 83,896 sq mi (217,291 sq km). Discovered in 1838 by Thomas Simpson, it was named for Queen Victoria and was first explored by John Rae in 1851. It is divided administratively between the Northwest Territories and the territory of Nunavut.

Victoria Island, c.81,930 sq mi (212,200 sq km), part of the Arctic Archipelago, Northwest Territories and Nunavut, N Canada; third largest island of Canada. On the southeast coast is Cambridge Bay, a U.S.-Canadian weather station and trading post. The island was visited by the British explorers Thomas Simpson and Peter W. Dease in the late 1830s; John Rae explored it in 1851.
