Out of Africa or in, Nigerian Eagle Airlines (formerly Virgin Nigeria Airways) is Nigeria's leading airline and part of the family of carriers affiliated with UK conglomerate Virgin Group. The airline offers scheduled passenger service between Lagos and about 15 destinations in Africa, including half a dozen in Nigeria. It operates a fleet of Airbus jets. Nigerian institutional investors own 51% of the company; Virgin Atlantic Airways owns 49%. Virgin Atlantic has been in talks to sell its stake, however, because of a dispute with the Nigerian government over where Virgin Nigeria should base its domestic operations. As part of the wind down with Virgin Atlantic, the carrier changed its name in September 2009.
