Game Description
Virtual Skipper incorporates actual yacht mechanics with international tournament rules and regulations followed by the professionals. As in real life, you steer one of three boats (useful in various situations) while monitoring wind speeds, adjusting the rudder, accommodating for wind angles and navigating various oceans; these variables are located on the HUD. Additionally, on-board radar has been included to monitor rival yachters.Regattas are modeled after actual courses from around the world including Needles Point, The Shingles, La Trinite-sur-Mer, Marina Island, the Isle of Waiheke and San Francisco Bay. Depending on the difficulty setting selected, it is possible to earn penalties for faulty steering or ramming into opposing yachters. When charged with an infraction, you must complete a 360-degree circle as a time penalty.
There are four different modes including Training, Match Race, Fleet Race and Championship. New pilots should start with the Training mode as it explains the rules and mechanics of manning a virtual yacht. After learning the required skills, Match Race pits you against one other opponent on the ocean. In this mode, you must reach a series of marks to complete a clockwise course more quickly than your opponent does in order to claim victory!
Fleet Race is similar to Match Race with a few small differences. An optional third mark can be rounded to avoid congestion and collision. While this mark can initially cost you valuable time and position, there are times when you should play it safe. Additionally, you must pass marks to the left in a counterclockwise fashion.
The final mode, The Championship, is a tournament in which all six courses must be navigated, completed and won. After crossing the finish line, race points are awarded based on your boat's position.
Virtual Skipper also contains online and LAN multiplayer support; up to eight human opponents can duke it out for America's Cup! As a result of Internet support, armchair yachters have the option of competing in international tournaments hosted by Ubi Soft. Additionally, there are various camera options including close-up angles, distance views and angles from all sides of your yacht.
No longer is the expensive nature of yachts prohibitive. Would-be yachters can now experience the thrill of racing on the open seas without getting so much as a toe wet in Virtual Skipper!
