Review
Although he did not become a star name in international composition, Henri Sauget had a respected place in French music through his long life (1901-1989) and beyond. His music has clarity of expression and form, with an elegance that recalls Chabrier. He was particularly at home in vocal and symphonic music, and his song cycles contain some of the most deeply felt of his music. He was a friend of poet Max Jacob, but only began setting Jacob's poetry in at a time (as he learned later) that Jacob had been arrested by the Gestapo. This later Jacob cycle has a truly tragic mood. Doda Conrad, the bass who premiered the cycle, has written that he doesn't know of another French song cycle which so effectively creates the atmosphere of desolation" found in Schubert's "Winterreise." A feature of the cycle is an 'attaca subito' direction at the end of the first five poems, making the set be performed as a continuous work. Conrad said he regarded the cycle as a one-act monodrama in six songs. ~ Joseph Stevenson, All Music Guide
