About
Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology(VNIT)is one of the 20 National Institutes of Technology Engineering Colleges established by the Indian Government. It currently imparts engineering and scientific education in 8 undergraduate, 11 graduate programmes and numerous other research programmes. Undergraduate programs lead to B.Tech. degrees, while graduate students and postgraduate students earn M.Tech. and Ph.D. degrees respectively. VNIT also has an architecture school awarding the B.Arch. and M.Arch. degrees.
Campus
The Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology,is located in the western edge of the city. The railway station is approximately 8 km and the airport is approximately 15 km from the college gates. The three main entrances to the campus are the Main Gate(South Ambazari road), the Bajaj Nagar gate and the Yashwantnagar Gate.( The Main Gate is the only open till 18:00 hrs. while the Yashwantnagar gate is open till 2300 hrs. Due to its proximity to the Ambazari lake, the campus is extremely green and thus untouched by the pollution of the rest of the city. The nag nadi(river) canal(almost extinct) flows right next to the Yashwantnagar gate.
History
The Institute was initially established as a joint venture of Indian Government and Government of Maharashtra as Visvesvaraya Regional Engineering College (VRCE) in June 1960. VRCE was converted into Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology and awarded Deemed to be University status under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 by Department of Secondary & Higher Education on 26 June 2002. However as on 15 August 2007 VNIT and other NITs no longer hold this status as NITs have been declared as Institutes of National Importance by the Government of India under the NIT Act.
VNIT has been conferred with autonomy in financial and administrative matters to help achieve rapid development. An autonomous Board of Governors having representatives of the Central Government, State Government, AICTE, UGC, teaching faculty, industrialists and technologists manages the institute. The current Chairman of Board of Governors of VNIT is Shri S. S. Sohoni (former Secretary to the President of India).
Academics
Admissions to the undergraduate course is done through the AIEEE. Admission to the post-graduate programs requires scores in both GATE and an All India Entrance Exam conducted by the admitting Department.
The institute offers 8 Undergraduate programmes in Engineering of four year duration, one Undergraduate programme in Architecture of five year duration and eleven Graduate programmes of two year duration. Ph.D. degrees are also awarded by the institute.
