video-on-demand

The ability to deliver a movie, sports event or other video program to a TV set when the customer requests it. Video-on-demand (VOD) refers to free and paid programs from cable and satellite TV companies, the telephone companies' DSL lines, and the Internet. Web-based video-on-demand is increasingly migrating from delivery to the PC to the TV as well with services such as Amazon's Video on Demand, VUDU and Netflix. Depending on the service, movies may be streamed to the TV or downloaded for future viewing. See Internet TV, home theater streaming, streaming video and IPTV.
