Ungern-Sternberg, Alexander, Freiherr von, also Alexander von Sternberg (Noistfer nr. Reval, 1806-68, Noistfer), a Baltic German, came to Germany in 1830 and lived chiefly in Dresden. He at first wrote Novellen and novels of social criticism, including Der Missionär (2 vols., 1842), Diane (3 vols., 1842), Paul (3 vols., 1845), and Braune Märchen (1850, reissued 1966). In 1848 he swung to the political right, publishing the novels Royalisten (2 vols., 1848) and Die beiden Stützen (1849). Late in life he produced biographical novels including one on Rubens (Peter Paul Rubens, 1862). His Erinnerungsblätter (6 vols.) appeared 1855-60.
