Inflammation of the vulva (female external genitalia), with red, swollen, itchy skin that may turn white, crack, or blister. The vulva provides a moist, warm breeding ground for microorganisms, particularly for yeast (see candida) but also for other fungi, bacteria, or viruses, especially if underwear is tight, nonporous, and nonabsorbent and if hygiene is poor. Pantyhose, synthetic underwear, detergents, vaginal sprays, and deodorants may cause allergy or irritation. Drying and thinning of tissues after menopause makes them more susceptible to irritation and infection. Treatment ranges from wearing loose, absorbent cotton underwear to creams that kill the infective microorganisms.

Vulvitis is a condition of inflammation of the vulva of a female.

Vulvitis is inflammation of the external genital organs of the female (the vulva). The vulva includes the labia, clitoris, and entrance to the vagina (the vestibule of the vagina). An inflammation of the vulva is referred to as vulvitis. Vulvitis, like vaginitis, may be caused by a number of different infections. Because the vulva is also often inflamed when there is inflammation of the vagina, vaginitis is sometimes referred to as vulvovaginitis.
