2. (Verdi: Luisa Miller). Bass. Count Walter. An old enemy of Luisa Miller's father. He wants his son Rodolfo to marry Federica, a young widow who is his niece. Created (1849) by Antonio Selva.

3. (Verdi: Luisa Miller). Tenor. Rodolfo, son of Count Walter. He is in love with Luisa Miller, but their fathers are sworn enemies. He lives in the village disguised as a peasant called ‘Carlo’. His father wants him to marry the young widow Federica, but he tells her the truth - that his heart is given to another. When he thinks Luisa has betrayed him, he resolves to poison both her and himself. Succeeding, he learns before he dies that she has been loyal to him and he kills his father's steward, Wurm, who has caused all the trouble between them.
