War Horse is an adaptation by Nick Stafford of a book of the same name by acclaimed children's writer, Michael Morpurgo. It is was first staged on 17 October 2007 at the National Theatre on London's South Bank and ran through to 14 February 2008.[1] The production returned to the National Theatre for a second run from 10 September 2008 to 18 March 2009. It transferred to the West End's New London Theatre ten days after it closed at the National, and is booking until the end of September 2009.[2]
The production was met with critical acclaim — its use of life-size puppets of horses from the Handspring Puppet Company won an Olivier Award, Evening Standard Theatre Award and London Critics' Circle Theatre Award for design.[3]

Synopsis
At the outbreak of World War I, Joey, young Albert's beloved horse, is sold to the cavalry and shipped to France. He's soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary odyssey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man's land. But Albert cannot forget Joey and, still not old enough to enlist, he embarks on a dangerous mission to find him and bring him home.
