Warcraft III World Editor is the official level editor for the real-time strategy game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne. Based on the level editor of Blizzard's previous strategy game StarCraft, it allows players to create and customize their own scenarios and campaigns with a high level of detail and flexibility.[1] [2] The editor has been used in creating several custom maps, including the popular Defense of the Ancients map.[3][4] The level editor has been substantially improved in the expansion to the game, The Frozen Throne and allow users to create cut scenes supporting voice-overs. [5] Advanced features of the editor allow for custom models, tilesets and icons. The editor also supports Blizzard's JASS scripting language for programming complex actions otherwise not supported by the graphical interface.

Many other things that it is capable of, is: First Person Shooters, Third Person Shooters, a term coined by Warcraft III - ORPG (Open Role Playing Game), Dungeon Crawl (similar to Diablo, and a map called "Diablo III Beta" was downloaded 11,00 times last month on a popular site called The Hive Workshop, and was downloaded more then 5,000 times in 4 days this month), Murder at the Mansion (there are some variations, such as Murder at the Elevator), Tower Defense, Maul (similar to Tower Defense, only that you build towers where creeps walk, and adds tactics by using them as mazes), Tag (e.g, Sheep Tag), Vampirism (On U.S West, Vampirism Fire is the second most hosted map, next to DoTA, and Vampirism Beast is regularly hosted on U.S East), and many other genres.

Modules

The editor is divided into different modules that allow the user to customize different features of a map.

  • The Terrain Editor allows the user to edit the map terrain, add water and trees and place player units and buildings.
  • The Object Editor allows the user to modify most attributes of objects in the game, such as the appearance and abilities of units, buildings and items. It also allows the user to create custom objects based on existing ones.
  • The Trigger Editor allows users to create triggers that fire when certain events occur in the game. Built on JASS, this allows for very powerful additions to the game.
  • The Import Manager allows the user to import custom models, textures, minimaps, loading-screens and sounds into a map.
  • The AI Editor allows the user to create custom AI scripts for computer players.
