Capital-area real estate is writ large on the mission statement of Washington Real Estate Investment Trust (WRIT). The self-administered and self-managed real estate investment trust (REIT) owns and manages commercial real estate in the Mid-Atlantic, mainly in the greater Washington/Baltimore corridor. WRIT owns a varied portfolio that includes more than 40 office or medical office buildings, about 15 retail centers, and about a dozen apartment communities, as well as land held for development. All together, the REIT's portfolio contains some 10 million sq. ft. of net rentable space. It divested its portfolio of 16 industrial and flex properties in five separate transactions during 2011.
