Une carafe d’eau (du robinet) means “pitcher of tap water,” which is perfectly fine to drink in Paris, and a good idea if you’re on a budget. If you don’t like the taste you can order eau plat (still mineral water like Evian) or eau gazeuse (sparkling mineral water like Perrier). Don’t say eau plat if you mean une carafe (even though tap water is still) or you’ll end up with bottled water and a bigger bill.
