| 1779 | "An Essay on Free Trade and Finance." Webster, who would become one of the outstanding political economists of the early Republic, publishes his first essay in support of a free trade policy by arguing that any restraints on commerce are unjust and self-defeating. |
| 1783 | Dissertation on the Political Union. The political economist argues that a central government must have taxation power. Some have argued that Webster was an important architect of the Constitution, but others have noted that he failed to anticipate some of its key features and that the drafters ignored several of his specific proposals. |
