weight-lifter's blackout

Sports Science and Medicine: weight-lifter's blackout

A loss of consciousness experienced during weight-lifting or another strength training activity when the breath is held. The combination of breath-holding and isometric muscle action during a lift diverts blood suddenly to the head, resulting in a blackout. Weight-lifter's blackout is prevented easily by using a proper breathing technique and by contracting other muscles while executing the lift.
