A diet that enables a person to lose weight. A weight loss of about 1 kg requires either a reduction in energy intake of 4200 kJ (1000 kcal) or an increase in energy expenditure of the same amount. Physically active people who are on low-energy diets (e.g. athletes trying to lose weight) have a high risk of nutrient deficiencies and should seek the advice of a sports dietician. Of special risk are young women who reduce their energy intake so that they are not consuming enough iron or calcium-containing foods (see osteoporosis).
