Columbia Encyclopedia: Weissenburg in Bayern
('sənbʊrk ĭn bī'yərn) or Weissenburg, town, Bavaria, S Germany. It is a manufacturing center of Middle Franconia; products include gold and silver lace, processed wood, and metal goods. Weissenburg was founded in the 9th cent. on a Roman site. It became a free imperial city in the mid-14th cent. and passed to Bavaria in 1806. Points of interest in the picturesque town include remains of Roman fortifications and of the town's medieval walls; the late Gothic town hall (1476); and the Carmelite church (15th cent.).
