A city of southeast Ontario, Canada, on the Welland Ship Canal, 44.4 km (27.6 mi) long, which connects Lake Erie with Lake Ontario and bypasses Niagara Falls. The current canal, completed in 1932, replaced a canal originally built between 1824 and 1833. The city is a port and a market and an industrial center. Population: 50,300.
