West Babylon is a census-designated place (CDP) in the town of Babylon in Suffolk County, New York, United States. The population was 43,452 at the 2000 census.
Geography
West Babylon is located at 41°43′49″N 74°21′27″W / 41.73028°N 74.3575°W / 41.73028; -74.3575 (40.713399, -73.357106).[3]
According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.0 square miles (20.8 km²), of which, 7.7 square miles (20.0 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.8 km²) of it (3.87%) is water.
Demographics
As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 43,452 people, 14,268 households, and 10,943 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,638.8 per square mile (2,176.0/km²). There were 14,571 housing units at an average density of 1,890.9/sq mi (729.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 83.79% White, 14.21% African American, 0.12% Native American, 1.90% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.03% from other races, and 1.83% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.70% of the population.
There were 14,268 households; 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 18.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.00 and the average family size was 3.42.
In the CDP the population was spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 32.6% from 25 to 44, 21.6% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 91.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
As of a 2007 estimate, the median income for a household was $75,580, and the median income for a family was $84,780[4]. Males had a median income of $77,378 versus $52,412 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $22,280. About 4.2% of families and 1.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 7.1% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
