Western Massachusetts Electric shines a light on the masses in western Mass. The company provides electric power services to more than 200,000 customers in about 60 towns and cities in a 1,490-sq.-mile service area in Massachusetts. Western Massachusetts Electric purchases its electricity from affiliate Select Energy. It is an operating subsidiary of Northeast Utilities, one of the largest utility companies in New England. The company operates 4,200 miles of distribution lines and 415 miles of transmission lines. It also has 45 substations and 35,200 transformer locations.
