Review

Kris Tyler's first album, What a Woman Knows, is an enormously promising debut, finding a provocative middle ground between the sensitive singer-songwriter territory of the early '70s and the gutsy roots-rock of '90s Bonnie Raitt. With producers Emory Gordy, Jr. and Tony Brown, Tyler has devised an appealingly clean sound that presents her emotional songs simply, which in turn highlights their direct melodies and naked emotionalism. The result is a thoroughly impressive record that establishes Nikki Tyler as one of the best female singer-songwriters in late-'90s country. ~ Thom Owens, All Music Guide
