The two types of deafness are conduction deafness and sensorineural, or perceptive, deafness. In conduction deafness, the transmission of sound waves through the middle ear is impaired. In sensorineural deafness, the transmission of nerve impulses anywhere from the cochlea to the auditory cortex of the brain is impaired.
