What causes a blister to the skin?

The epidermis and dermis are usually firmly cemented together by a basement membrane that is anchored to the dermis. However, a burn or friction due to, for example, rubbing of poorly fitting shoes may cause the epidermis and dermis to separate, resulting in a blister.
