What is a mamzer?

Jewish Primer: What is a mamzer?

The common English translation of the word is "illegitimate," but the translation is incorrect. According to Jewish law, a child born of unmarried parents has no permanent stigma as such, and may marry any other person. The mamzer is only the offspring of an adulterous or incestuous union.
