What is a muscle spasm?

A muscle spasm is a sudden, strong, and painful involuntary contraction. When a muscle is in spasm it feels tight and is described as being in a knot. Muscle spasms occur more frequently in muscles that are overworked or injured. Rest and time resolve most muscle spasms. A "charley horse" is a common name for a muscle spasm in the leg.
