What is a stone plant?

The species Lithops turbuniformis is known by several common names, including stone plant, flowering stone, and living stone. The genus name Lithops comes from the Greek words lithos, which means "stone," and opsis, meaning "face" or "appearance." The plant is native to South Africa, Namibia, and the West Coast of Africa. The plants are very difficult to see since their appearance mimics the rocks and stones of their natural habitat. They have two thick leaves and a single flower that is either yellow or white in color. Stone plants thrive in very arid conditions with minimal rainfall.
