An island is a body of land surrounded by water. While continents are also bodies of land surrounded by water, they are much larger in size. The smallest continent of the world is Australia. It has almost three million square miles (close to eight million square kilometers) of area. That makes it almost four times the size of the world's biggest island-Greenland-which has an area of around 840,000 square miles (2,175,000 square kilometers).
