Bark protects the interior tissues of a tree from external
physical threats such as rain, hail, and snow, and biological threats such as
animals, fungi, and bacteria. Bark also serves as a dumping ground in which the
tree rids itself of waste products from its metabolism. Nutrients are
transported through the phloem of the bark from the roots to the crown of the
tree.
