The Mishnah tells us (Avot 5:25), "At the age of thirteen, one is obliged to observe the commandments." This is the average age when puberty is assumed to begin. Girls, whose puberty begins earlier, must observe all the commandments from the age of twelve. (We will discuss the Bat Mitzvah further on in this section.)
