When does the bar mitzvah take place?

Jewish Primer: When does the bar mitzvah take place?

The Mishnah tells us (Avot 5:25), "At the age of thirteen, one is obliged to observe the commandments." This is the average age when puberty is assumed to begin. Girls, whose puberty begins earlier, must observe all the commandments from the age of twelve. (We will discuss the Bat Mitzvah further on in this section.)

Previous question: What is the significance of this in practical terms?
Next question: How is this transition from being a child to being an adult marked?
