Gîte de la Portanière (83390 Pierrefeu du Var, ☎ 33 04 94 28 21 48 or 3 0 6 25 84 47 25, postmaster@gite-portaniere.com, www.gite-portaniere.com, B&B and rural gîte). This is very basic accommodation in a recently renovated 1930s schoolhouse. Painted in kindergarten colors, with bare floors and bunk beds, this is clean and modern but not someplace you’d stay very long. Still, its location on the GR51 makes it a convenient, budget stopover for long-distance hikers or riders at a price that is hard to beat – €15 for bed and breakfast. There is also an independent gîte for four, with its own kitchen and bath, available weekly. Stabling and mountain bike storage as well as linen rental can be arranged.
WHEN IN ROME... Village houses and flats that rent by the week and sometimes the weekend are a good alternative in this region and certainly what most French visitors do. Homes are generally nicely furnished with well-equipped kitchens. Because private rental accommodation tends to be less formal and more personal, the listings change from year to year. Local tourist offices and Gîtes de France are your best sources for finding what’s available when you want to go. If you can handle French, L’Annuaire Hébergement Rural en France (HRFrance, www.hrfrance.com/index.php) is another good source for rural gîtes and online booking. Here are descriptions of some typical properties: Village house, sleeps six. Renovated house with reception, fully equipped kitchen, two rooms with double beds, one room with twin beds, two bathrooms with shower and WC. Washing machine, infant bed and chair, linens supplied. Weekly rental €350 to €540, depending upon the season. Apartment for two. Village center above a restaurant. One double bedroom, living room, kitchen, bathroom, washing machine, television. €40 per night. Three story village house for two. In the center of the old town, a restored character house. Fully equipped American kitchen opening onto a living room/dining room with chimney. One bedroom with bathroom and separate WC. One room with three single beds, bathroom and separate WC, terrace with panoramic views, barbecue, dishwasher, microwave, oven, wine cellar, fridge. Weekly rental €450. |
