Answer: The Japanese didn't buy anything, they used their military superiority to take what they wanted. The oil rich Dutch East Indies were captured as well as any other significant property which could be of any value. Early on, Chinese proviences, that had raw material that could be moved to Japan across the relatively narrow sea which seperates China from Japan, were primary targets. If the Japanese bought any oil during WWII it had to come from Russia as Japan was not at war with the Russians until the final few days of the second world war. I cannot readily supply or cite references for this exchange of material, but this is where Japan was free to engage in commerce. Oil supplies from Nazi friendly Arabia would have been suicidal for any freighter attempting such a mission. Answer: Russia. Russia supplied Japan with Raw Material in order to avoid a two front war. Hitler thought the Japanese would figure out that attacking the Russians would get them the raw materials they wanted, and the result would be that together, Japan and Germany would have eaten the elephant, and the elephant was Russia! Stalin thought that himself and Hitler would combine to eat the elephant, that being the rest of the world. This is why Stalin refused to believe his own spies who reported the day and hour of the Nazi invasion before it happened. But Stalin was a caculating sociopath, but Hitler was an idealog and Joseph Stalin never read Hitlers Book, so he had no idea that the die was cast for war with Nazi Germany, and also could never comprehend Hitlers rationale behind the attack. It has been reported that Adolf Hitler was one the very few people that Stalin liked. He became obsessed with getting Hitler at any cost for doing this thing to him, and for ruining the chance to rule the entire world as no one ever had! At any rate, it was Russia that supplied Japan with oil.
Answer: They weren't buying oil. They were just taking it from China and SE Asia.
