Wiener Börse Ag (Vienna Stock Exchange)

Financial & Investment Dictionary: Wiener Börse Ag (Vienna Stock Exchange)

Founded in 1771 by Maria Theresia, Wiener Börse, it is the only securities exchange and listing authority in Austria. Early on, the exchange was primarily a marketplace for trading bonds, bills of exchange and foreign currencies; shares were traded for the first time in 1818. Today, the market segments are equity market (stocks), bond market (bonds), otob market (derivatives), and structured products (certificates, warrants), and other listings (containing all securities that cannot be allocated to any other segment). All trading on Wiener Börse is operated by the fully electronic trading systems, Xetra® (cash market) and OMex® (derivatives, warrants). These systems guarantee the greatest possible transparency as well as fast and efficient execution of market transactions. Equity trading includes stocks, bonds, investment fund certificates and index certificates, participation certificates, profit-sharing certificates, and subscription rights. Futures and options are traded on Austrian stocks, the ATX (Austrian Traded Index), and CECE indices. The ATX represents the continuously traded stocks on the prime market with the highest liquidity and market capitalization. The WBI (Wiener Boerse index) represents the performance of all Austrian stocks admitted to listing on the Official Market. The Vienna Dynamic Index (ViDX) includes growth- and technology-oriented companies listed at the Wiener Börse. The ATX Prime contains all the stocks listed on the prime market segment and serves as a benchmark for institutional investors. The CECE indices track the most attractive companies listed on Central and East European stock exchanges and serve as underlyings for futures and options traded at the otob market. Trading at Wiener Boerse is conducted Monday through Friday. The Wiener Börse Information Products department supplies professionally compiled real-time price data and market depth data to data vendors and private investors. As a special service, Wiener Börse computes and disseminates 19 stock indices in real time, which have become established as benchmarks for the domestic and Central and East European markets. www.wienerborse.at.
