The process of drilling for oil in an area that has been left unexplored.

Investopedia Says:
The area in which the wildcat drilling occurs has usually not yielded commercial amounts of oil in prior to drilling. Due to the uncertainty of striking oil, investors who choose to enter into a wildcat oil and gas limited partnership are exposed to high risks.
