Wilhelm von Kügelgen

Kügelgen, Wilhelm von (St Petersburg, 1802-67, Bernburg), the son of a well-known painter, G. von Kügelgen (1772-1820), studied art in Dresden, went to Russia in 1827, and in 1834 became official painter to the Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg. His memoirs, Jugend-erinnerungen eines alten Mannes, were published posthumously in 1870 (repr. 1970). Written with urbanity and discreet humour, they are a valuable document of Kügelgen's times. They were complemented by his letters to his brother, published as Lebenserinnerungen, ed. J. Werner and P. S. von Kügelgen, in 1923, and as Bürgerleben. Die Briefe an den Bruder Gerhard 1840-1867, ed. W. Killy (with introduction) in 1990.
