Kügelgen, Wilhelm von (St Petersburg, 1802-67, Bernburg), the son of a well-known painter, G. von Kügelgen (1772-1820), studied art in Dresden, went to Russia in 1827, and in 1834 became official painter to the Duke of Anhalt-Bernburg. His memoirs, Jugend-erinnerungen eines alten Mannes, were published posthumously in 1870 (repr. 1970). Written with urbanity and discreet humour, they are a valuable document of Kügelgen's times.
