(b Grossen Behringen, bap. 25 Feb 1735; d Weimar, 29-30 Nov 1792). German composer. He studied in Jena, where he directed and composed for the collegium musicum. After periods in Leipzig and Naumburg, he joined the Weimar court as music tutor to Anna Amalia's sons. He stayed there, becoming Kapellmeister in 1772. As a composer he strove to create new modes of expression, and became widely known. Hisc20 Singspiels and other operas, written for Weimar and elsewhere, have a sensitive melodic style, sometimes with folk elements. He also wrote numerous sacred and secular vocal works, orchestral, chamber and keyboard works and books on music. His wife was the singer and harpsichordist Maria Carolina Benda (1742-1820); he was related to J.F. Reichardt.
