William Colchester

(fl.1385–d. 1420)

English mason. He worked at Southampton Castle (1385–8) before becoming chief mason at Westminster Abbey in 1400, where he worked on the nave. In 1407 he was appointed to rebuild the fallen belfry at York Minster, and remained in charge of the works there until 1419. In 1418 he was appointed King's master-mason at Westminster Palace and the Tower of London. His most notable works are the stone screens at the entrance to the choir-aisles, the buttresses at the eastern piers of the tower, and the stone altar-screen, all in York Minster.
