US Military Dictionary:
William Crawford |
Crawford, William (1732-82) Revolutionary War soldier, born in Frederick County, Virginia. A surveyor, land speculator, and personal friend of George Washington, Crawford's loyalty to his birthplace led him to enlist in the Continental troops raised by Virginia early in the Revolution. He served under Washington at the battles of New York, Trenton (both 1776), and Princeton (1777). As commander of an expedition into the Ohio country in 1782, Crawford was captured by Native American and British forces and was burned at the stake in retaliation for the massacre of a party of Christian Delaware Indians.
