William Dorsey Pender |
Pender, William Dorsey (1834-63) Confederate army officer, born in North Carolina. Pender was an ardent defender of states' rights who joined the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was a brave and resourceful commander who fought at many major engagements, including Harpers Ferry (1861) and Mechanicsville (1862). He was wounded in battle in 1863 and died from his injury.
