1866The Good Gray Poet: A Vindication. After Walt Whitman had been dismissed from his government job for writing "obscene" poetry, his friend O'Connor comes to his defense, supplying the sobriquet that would long be attributed to the poet. O'Connor was a government employee who had helped Whitman gain a position in the Department of the Interior and in the attorney general's office.
