William Flora

Flora, William (fl. 1775-1818) Revolutionary War hero and patriot, born at Portsmouth, Virginia. One of the few free blacks in Virginia at the time, his bravery in combat was recognized in the early Battle of Great Bridge (1775). Flora also fought at Yorktown (1781). After the war he acquired considerable wealth from a variety of business enterprises.
