Life and career
Hope was born in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London and appeared in theatre on both sides of the Atlantic. After appearing in Lords of Discipline, he appeared in Aliens (1986) as Lt. Gorman, a role for which he started to receive recognition.
That film gave him an opportunity to play a supporting role as Kyle McRae in the brutal horror classic Hellbound: Hellraiser 2 (1988), the sequel to Clive Barker's Hellraiser (1987). The film created a lot of debate due its gruesome, explicit violence nature. After Hellbound: Hellraiser 2, Hope went on to work on a number of theatrical films. He had parts in Shining Through (1992) and The Saint (1997). He appeared in Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004) and Triple X (2002). More recently he co-starred in two Wesley Snipes' action epics The Marksman(2005) and The Detonator (2006) and as the villain in Steven Seagal's action movie Submerged (2005). He also appeared as Harry Ramos in the award winning TV documentary/docudrama 9/11: The Twin Towers, a film of the 9/11 attacks through the eyes of the survivors. Recently he has been seen opposite Woody Harrelson in The Walker (2007) written and directed by Hollywood legend Paul Schrader. He has recently finished shooting Sherlock Holmes with "Robert Downey Jr." and The Whistleblower with "Rachel Weisz".
In 2007 he guest-starred in the Doctor Who audio drama Renaissance of the Daleks. He also returned to the horror genre, working in the Solar Film's experimental Dark Floors, released in Europe in 2008. He is regularly heard on BBC Radio and is part of the BBC "Broken News" cast. Hope has appeared with stars like Sigourney Weaver, Michael Douglas, George C. Scott, Val Kilmer.
He is also providing the voices of Edward, Henry, James, Percy, Toby and Kevin in the new Thomas & Friends film Hero of the Rails.[1]
Hope was awarded the Aliens Legacy Gold Award at Collectormania 2008, in Glasgow.
William Hope, along with Laurel Lefkow, read the unabridged version of Audrey Niffenegger's novel, The Time Traveler's Wife (Shortlisted for Audible's Listen of the Year, 2006). He has read a wide range of audio books, including In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, Sophie's Choice by William Styron, Washington Square by Henry James and more recently Michael Tolliver Lives by Armistead Maupin.
Hope has a brother, Barclay Hope, who is also an actor.
