William Jessup University is a small non-denominational Christian college located in Rocklin, California. It is the only evangelical Christian college between Fresno and Redding.[1] The university has a total of 592 students.[2]
History
The University got its start as San Jose Bible College in 1939, in San Jose. William Jessup was the school's first President. By 1951, with the school expanding and the San José State University across the street encroaching, San Jose Bible College moved to an attractive parcel bordered by Coyote Creek and fronted by 12th Street. Spanish style classroom buildings with covered walkways, a modern library, and several dormitory buildings made up the small campus; four tall palm trees, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, greeted visitors as they entered the grounds.
William Jessup retired in 1960 and was replaced by Alvan L. Tiffin. Woodrow Phillips, an alumnus, was President from 1968 to 1979. The current President is Bryce Jessup, a Pepperdine University alumnus, and son of the original President.
In 1989, the school was renamed San Jose Christian College. In 2002, the school was regionally accredited by WASC. As the school's enrollment increased, it became obvious that expansion was necessary. Property was at a premium in the Santa Clara Valley, and it was decided to move to Rocklin, in the California Central Valley, in April 2003. The name was changed to William Jessup University and when the institution moved to Rocklin, in 2004, the name San Jose Christian College was no longer used.
A branch campus has been retained in San Jose that serves only the degree completion students.
Demographics
As of the fall 2006 demographic report, William Jessup University is 71% white, 8% Latino, 6% African American, 4% Asian, and 11% other or undisclosed. 82% percent of the students and 92% of the undergraduate students at William Jessup are full time students.
Community College Transfers
Recently, William Jessup University developed community college transfer agreements with sixteen community colleges in California. Among the community colleges that signed agreements are Sierra College, American River College, Sacramento City College, Cosumnes River College, Folsom Lake College, and Yuba College. The agreement provides students with a list of transferable courses and a list of classes to take for a major that will meet the William Jessup academic requirements. This is supposed to simplify the process for people who wish to transfer to the university.
