Lawrence, W[illiam] J. (1862-1940), theatrical historian and drama critic, born in Belfast. His general works on theatrical history include The Physical Conditions of the Elizabethan Public Play house (1927) and Old Theatre Days and Ways (1935). Among many Irish researches, he discovered the parentage of Dion Boucicault and wrote lives of Michael Balfe and the tragic actor Gustavus Vaughan Brooke (1818-67), while his ‘Notebooks for a History of the Irish Stage’, held at Cincinnati University, provide a unique record.
