William Thompson

Irish Literature Companion: William Thompson

Thompson, William (1785-1833), socialist reformer and author. Born in Rosscarbery, Co. Cork, he established an ill-fated agrarian co-operative on his estate there. In An Enquiry into the Principles of the Distribution of Wealth most Conducive to Human Happiness (1824), he noted that manufacture tended to impoverish still further the working classes. Thompson also issued An Appeal of one Half of the Human Race, Women, against … Civil and Domestic Slavery (1825), written in collaboration with Anne Wheeler.
