Römer, Willy (1887-1979), Berlin-based German photojournalist who covered numerous events of the German Revolution, including the Spartakist rising of January 1919. Berlin's status as a leading press centre, with numerous agencies and newspaper offices, meant that Römer's images, captured despite the limitations of a heavy Deckrullo-Nettel plate camera, were widely disseminated. His picture agency, Photothek, prospered in the 1920s but closed in 1935, partly because of Nazi pressure. Its archive of c.50, 000 negatives still existed at Römer's death.
