Biography

Dennis Crommett (guitar), Dave Hower (drums), Philip Price (vocals/guitar), and Flora Reed (vocals/keyboards) create the haunting melodies of Winterpills. The Northampton, MA, quartet initially came together in winter 2003; Crommett and Price, whose résumés include time spent playing with Spanish for Hitchhiking and the Maggies respectively, were looking to expand their acoustic jam sessions into something bigger, thus bringing on Hower (Spanish for Hitchhiking, the Fucking Sparklies, the Neilds). Folkie singer/songwriter Reed, who made her solo debut with 2002's Settle Down, joined in early 2004, making Winterpills official. Their self-titled debut for Signature Sounds arrived in 2005, and press outlets such as NPR's Weekend Edition and XM Radio's The Loft championed the Winterpills' dreamy, delicate indie rock stylings. Shows with the likes of Erin McKeown, the Mountain Goats, Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter, and Martha Wainwright also rounded out the band's promotion for Winterpills. Their second offering for Signature Sounds, The Light Divides, is slated for February 2007. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide

History

The band formed in the winter of 2003-2004 and began playing out regionally (New England) in the spring of 2004. Playing the melancholy songs of Philip Price, the band's characteristic sound is a combination of fragile and melancholy acoustic folk-pop, with vital male-female harmonies (Price and Reed), filled out with the distinctive edginess of Crommett's washy-watercolor electric guitar and Hower's tense drumming.

Their albums have received high praise by the Washington Post, No Depression, The Utne Reader, USA Today, Paste Magazine, MOJO, The Village Voice, and the Boston Globe, among others. They have shared the stage with such notable artists as Vampire Weekend, St. Vincent, CAKE, Lisa Germano, Juana Molina, Ladybug Transistor, The Mountain Goats, Crowded House, Erin McKeown, Fountains of Wayne, Alejandro Escovedo, Rainer Maria, Martha Wainwright, Josh Ritter among others. While touring extensively the band played Mountain Stage on NPR, and were featured on NPR's Weekend Edition and World Café, and XM Radio's Loft Sessions.
