wire side

 

1. Side of uncoated paper that is formed against the wire. For paper made on a Fourdrinier machine, the wire side is rougher and is generally not the side printed. For paper made on a cylinder machine, the wire side is the smoother, printing side. The wire side of coated paper cannot be distinguished from the felt side.

2. Woven brass, nylon, or bronze cloth used in papermaking machines. See also twin-wire machine.
