Wives and Daughters is a BBC serial adapted from the novel Wives and Daughters: An Everyday Story by Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell.
The programme, which originally aired in 1999, was written by Andrew Davies; produced by Sue Birtwistle, Rebecca Eaton, Rupert Ryle-Hodges, and Jane Tranter; and directed by Nicholas Renton. The miniseries featured actors Justine Waddell, Sir Michael Gambon, Penelope Wilton, Bill Paterson, Francesca Annis, Keeley Hawes, Rosamund Pike, Tom Hollander, Anthony Howell, Barbara Flynn, Deborah Findlay, Iain Glen, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, and Ian Carmichael.
Levens Hall in Kendal was one of the locations used for the film. It was used as the Hamley’s family estate for this BBC TV drama. Dyrham Park in South Gloucestireshire was also used for some of the outdoor shots; the [National Trust]property was closed to the public for three days while these scenes were shot.
